I have a secret…
I love a bargain (ok, that’s not the secret). Which is why I head to the Powerhouse on the last Sunday of the month to rummage through people’s things and find items of clothing and accessories that I can bring new life to. To name a few of my little suitcase rummage treasures, I have dresses from Zara and the Gap UK, scarves, jewellery, a Country Road silk blouse and Levi jeans. And I have never paid more than $10 for a single item. I cannot even tell you how many times I have been complemented on a piece of clothing that I have picked up from a suitcase rummage. In fact, at one point, the majority of my wardrobe was actually made up of the unique bits and pieces that I had picked up. As well as pre-loved items, people also sell amazing homemade arts and crafts. Anybody can have a stall. All you have to do is register and pay the small fee at www.suitcaserummage.com.au.
Today I picked up a fabulous grey H&M scarf ($5) and oversized American Apparel wool jumper ($10). I also bought a handmade toy giraffe featuring batman material for my Godson (I couldn’t resist).
The giraffe was made by local designer Yasmin Macfarlane from Yasmina’s Designs. All of her toys are handmade personally by Yasmin using allergy free materials. It is definitely worth checking out her gorgeous creations. There is something really special about supporting local designers and artists. Reason #4967 why I love markets.
Whilst the market is not particularly huge and I can’t guarantee that you will always find something, it is definitely worth checking it out when it is on. Even if just to be inspired. Besides, worst case scenario, you still get to go to the absolutely beautiful New Farm park where you can have a gorgeous picnic lunch overlooking the river – or you can visit one of the fabulous cafes or restaurants in the area for lunch. Really, what’s there to lose?
“A mini-scaled market with giant rewards”. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
